1Ball Mastery & Dribbling
What this block builds
Build a love of running with the ball. Loads of touches, a ball each wherever possible, and dribbling in tight spaces so nobody is ever stood in a queue.
- First touches
- Changing direction
- Close control
- Out of the turn
- Shielding
- Festival week
Week 01 First touches
A ball each, eyes up Β· Get every child dribbling with confidence and looking up, not down at their feet.
- Small touches with laces and sole
- Head up between touches to spot space
- Move into gaps, never stand still
Dribble maze
Set up: A ball each in a 30Γ20 box dotted with cones
- Dribble everywhere without touching a cone or another player
- On "freeze" everyone stops the ball dead with a sole
Why: Maximises touches and gets players scanning for space from the first minute.
Gate game
Set up: Scatter cone gates across the area
- Count how many different gates each player can dribble through in ninety seconds, then beat it
Why: A simple target turns dribbling into a fun, repeatable challenge.
Two-goal football
Set up: Small-sided game to four mini-goals
- Any player who dribbles past someone before a goal earns their team a bonus point
Why: Rewards trying to dribble in a real game, whatever the result.
Week 02 Changing direction
Drag-back & hook Β· Introduce two ways to change direction quickly β the drag-back and the inside hook.
- Sole on top to drag the ball back
- Turn away from pressure
- Push out of the turn with pace
Traffic lights
Set up: Players dribble in the area
- "Red" stop the ball, "amber" drag it backwards, "green" accelerate into space
Why: Practises stopping and turning as a reaction, the way it happens in games.
Turning gates
Set up: Dribble up to a gate, turn back before you reach it, then attack a different gate from a new angle
Why: Repeats the turn with a clear before-and-after picture.
Corner scramble
Set up: Four target zones in the corners
- Score by stopping the ball in a zone
- A turn away from a defender opens up the next corner
Why: Turning becomes the way to escape and score, not a drill for its own sake.
Week 03 Close control
Keep it close under pressure Β· Keep the ball within a stride when a defender is nearby.
- Ball stays within one step
- Body between ball and defender
- Change speed to lose the chaser
Sharks & minnows
Set up: Minnows each dribble from one side to the other without a shark (start with one or two) knocking their ball out
- Lose it and you become a shark
Why: Close control under a fun, growing threat, with heads up to find a gap.
Shadow chaser
Set up: In pairs, a dribbler is followed a metre behind by a partner through a coned lane, protecting the ball as they go
Why: Light, constant pressure teaches players to feel where the defender is.
King of the ring
Set up: Everyone dribbles inside a circle protecting their own ball while trying to knock others out
- Lose your ball, do a skill move to earn your way back in
Why: Shielding and awareness in a brilliant, self-refereeing game.
Week 04 Out of the turn
Accelerate after turning Β· Add an explosive burst to the turns from week two.
- Big first touch out of the turn
- Drive into the space you made
- Then settle the ball back down
Slalom races
Set up: Dribble down a slalom of cones, then explode across an open zone to the next slalom
Why: Pairs tight control with a change of pace.
Turn and go
Set up: Dribble to a line, turn, then race a defender who sets off on your turn to a finish zone
Why: The turn now has a real reward β beating someone to the space.
Line game
Set up: Score by stopping the ball under control on the far line
- A sharp turn to escape pressure is the way through
Why: Repeats accelerate-out-of-the-turn inside a game.
Week 05 Shielding
Protect the ball Β· Keep the ball by putting your body in the way.
- Body sideways-on between ball and defender
- Arm out as a barrier, no pushing
- Roll the ball to your far foot
King of the ring
Set up: Everyone in a circle with a ball, shielding to keep it while nudging other balls out
- Last one with a ball wins the round
Why: A playful, high-touch introduction to protecting the ball.
Thirty-second keep
Set up: 1v1 in a small square
- The attacker shields to keep the ball away from the defender for thirty seconds, then swap
Why: Direct, repeatable shielding reps under real pressure.
Keep-ball squares
Set up: Two teams, one ball
- Keep possession with dribbles and short passes
- Ten touches in a row scores a point
Why: Shielding buys the time to make a good decision as a team.
Week 06 Festival week
Show it all off Β· Celebrate the block with games that reward dribbling and turning.
- Encourage risk-taking
- Praise the attempt, not just the outcome
- Let them play β coach quietly
Roadrunner tag
Set up: Everyone dribbles
- Two taggers (also with a ball) try to tag them
- Get tagged and you become a tagger too
Why: A fast, fun tag game that keeps every ball moving.
Beat-the-clock relay
Set up: Teams race a course of gates, slaloms and turns, each player beating the teamβs best time
Why: Individual mastery measured against themselves, not others.
Mini-tournament
Set up: Rotating small-sided games
- A goal scored right after beating a player counts double
Why: Ends the block on dribbling, with a smile.
